Why Weight Is Incomplete: Focus on Body Composition Instead
When it comes to health, relying solely on the number on the scale gives you incomplete information. What’s more important is understanding your body composition—the breakdown of muscle, fat, and other components that make up your body.
Have you ever watched a marathon? You’ll see runners of all shapes and sizes. Some may look overweight, but they’re incredibly fit. Contrast this with people who appear thin yet can’t perform basic movements like push-ups or squats. Fitness isn’t about looking a certain way—it’s about how your body functions and feels.
Your weight is simply a measure of your body mass against gravity on Earth. If you were on the moon, your weight would be entirely different. It’s not the full picture.
Modern scales can go further, measuring:
Skeletal Muscle Mass (how much muscle you have)
Visceral Fat (fat around your organs)
Water Composition
While the accuracy of these metrics can vary, they provide a far clearer picture of health than weight alone.
In physical therapy school, I worked with cadavers. Some appeared fit on the outside but had internal organs surrounded by visceral fat, a dangerous type that increases the risk of chronic illnesses. On the other hand, some larger-looking individuals had little visceral fat and healthier organ systems.
Visceral fat is what we should focus on reducing—not the number on the scale.
This year, forget about "losing weight." Instead, focus on gaining muscle mass.
Why?
Boosted Metabolism: Muscle cells burn more energy, even at rest.
Increased Energy: More muscle means more mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell), creating energy in the form of ATP.
Improved Confidence: The discipline of strength training spills over into other areas of life, building confidence and resilience.
Enhanced Appearance: Stronger muscles often lead to a leaner, healthier look.
Lifting weights isn’t complicated, but it does take consistency and self-discipline. Start with small, achievable goals and consider working with a coach to ensure proper form and progression.
Don’t let the scale dictate your health journey. Care more about your body’s composition than its weight. Focus on getting stronger, building muscle, and moving more throughout your day. The results will go beyond numbers—you’ll feel and look better while improving your long-term health.
Appreciate you spending your time here today. Keep moving, keep lifting, and keep getting better every day!
